11 Benefits of Bone Broth

I’m sure you remember your mother telling you to eat your chicken soup when you were sick. And likely when you did, you actually felt better. Have you ever wondered why?

I recommend everyone make bone broth and incorporate it into your diet. Plus keep reading for an amazing bone broth recipe.

HERE’S WHY BONE BROTH IS SO ESSENTIAL:

1. It heals the gut.

The gelatin in bone broth protects and heals the mucosal lining of the digestive tract and helps aid in the digestion of nutrients.

Bone broth is excellent for "healing and sealing" your gut.

It also helps with acid refulx, constipation, chronic diarrhea, and many more gastric issues.

2. Fights infections such as colds and flu.

A study published in the journal Chest shows eating chicken soup during a respiratory infection reduces the number of white blood cells, which are the cells that cause flu and cold symptoms.

3. Reduces joint pain and inflammation.

Bone broth contains chondroitin sulphates, glucosamine, and many other minerals. The glucosamine in bone broth can actually stimulate the growth of new collagen, repair damaged joints and reduce pain and inflammation.

4. Produces gorgeous skin, hair and nails.

The collagen and gelatin in bone broth supports hair growth and helps to keep your nails strong.

5. Helps with bone formation, growth and repair.

The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in bone broth helps our bones to grow and repair.

6. Saves you money.

Homemade bone broth is cheaper and healthier than store bought. Plus the added minerals will cut down on sickness and doctor bills.

7. Great source of energy and can help you kick caffeine

It not only can be consumed in place of coffee, but offers the energy boost you desire, without the shakes.

8. Healthier than buying supplements.

Homemade bone broth contains all nutrients and minerals found in bones and tendons rather than just one or two found in pills. Slow cooking preserves the nutrients better than the high heat extraction used to make supplements.

9. Fights inflammation.

Bone broth is very high the amino acids glycine, proline, and arginine and they all have anti-inflammatory effects. Arginine, for example, has been found to be particularly beneficial for the treatment of sepsis.5

10. Promotes sleep and calms the mind.

The amino acid glycine found in bone broth can be very calming and help you sleep better.

11. Excellent post-workout recovery shake.

The amino acids found in bone broth are the building blocks of protein. They, help build muscle, promote longevity, and aid in fat loss. Amino acids are popular amongst bodybuilders, weight lifters, and performance athletes because they help maintain lean muscle mass while burning fat.

Here is my favorite recipe to make bone broth:

Healing Bone Broth Recipe

4 pounds mixed Wholesome Family beef/chicken/pork marrow bones, oxtail, knuckles, short rib, etc.(bones can be fresh or used from a previous meal) Or a whole chicken

2 medium onions

2 medium carrots

3 stalks celery

1 bay leaf

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Place bones, vegetables, bay leaf and apple cider vinegar into a 6-quart crockpot or instant pot. Cover completely with cold water. (All the ingredients should be submerged by about 1 inch of water.)

  2. Cook on low for 12-24 hours for slow cooker(add water as needed). Cook on high pressure for 90min-120min for instant pot.

  3. After cooking, the broth should be a dark brown color. Strain the broth through a fine mesh strainer and discard the bones, vegetables and bay leaf.

  4. Before storing, pour into separate containers and cool to room temperature. Skim off the accumulated fat at the top of the container, if desired. Store in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for up to 3 months

*Please note the addition of vinegar, which helps leech all those valuable minerals from the bones into the stockpot water, which is ultimately what you'll be eating. The goal is to extract as many minerals as possible out of the bones into the broth water.

Start making your own bone broth today to reap these wonderful benefits.

Plus you can substitute bone broth for stock in any recipe for more time and money saving benefits.
